A Race Through Italy

Another one of my favorite customers is @GenSpin. She is one of the sweetest and most positive ladies I know. She wanted a Cars 2 cake for her son's birthday. He loves Francesco from the movie, so she wanted an Italian touch to the cake. I went with a race through Italy theme with famous monuments from the country. Also, the race track is in the shape of a "5" because that's how old her son turned.

I give one of my co-workers a hard time every time she orders a cake. Mostly because she gave me a guilt trip when I couldn't make her daughter a birthday cake one year because I was at Comic-Con. It's all fun and games and she's a frequent customer so I don't sass it up too much.

Her nephew's birthday party was the day of a USC game, so that was the theme for the party. I think her nephew was just turning one, so it's not like he cared. haha I made a football cake with the school logo.

A former co-worker's boyfriend ordered a birthday cake for her back in July. She returned the favor for his birthday a couple months ago. He's an outdoors person, so she wanted a fish cake, specifically a trout. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to pull it off, but I think it turned out ok!

A former co-worker hosted a baby shower for her best friend a few months ago. The theme for the shower was Dr. Seuss. She gave me all the ideas and books she wanted to incorporate and I mashed them all up into a cake!

One of my regular customers wanted a cake for her best friend. She gave me a long list of her friend's favorite things and offered some suggestions for the cake. I wanted the cake to make sense instead of just sticking a bunch of random things on it. Since her friend loves her iPhone I suggested making an iPhone cake and having the apps be all her interests. Genius, I know. ;)

I don't have kids yet so I'm not going to pretend to know what's hip when it comes to TV. A co-worker requested a Ni Hao, Kai-Lan cake last week. I said "Ni Hao, what?!" I had no idea what she was talking about. After a little research, she seems like the Chinese version of Dora the Explorer. She's super cute!

The monthly birthday parties at the DWC haven't had themes for a few months now. It's made it a little hard to come up with a design for the cakes. I don't want to do just generic flowers, balloons, etc.

The ladies play games during the party. It's usually BINGO. The prizes have had themes, so I've taken inspiration from the prizes for the cakes. This month the prizes were laundry items.

The washer is way bigger than the person, but that's ok because it's a cake!

I don't know if I've said this before, but I am not a fan of half sheet cakes. They're big and heavy. My theory is that if you're having that many guests, get a smaller tiered cake and cupcakes. I think that looks better displayed than a big ol' cake. That being said, I won't turned down a half sheet cake order. haha I will turn down a full sheet cake order though. No way. TOO big!

Anyways, I got an order for a pirate-themed half sheet cake. The pirate theme made the half sheet not so bad.

My customers are mostly repeat ones. I've made a few baby shower cakes that turned into future 1st and 2nd birthday cakes. It's pretty awesome. This is one of those cakes. I will forever remember doing the baby shower cake for this lady, because I delivered it on my birthday and the cake was huge. The baby shower was at a park, but I had to deliver it to her apartment because I had birthday plans. I didn't know the party was moving to a park though. The apartment didn't look like it was set up for a party, but I set up the cake anyways. After I found out, I just keep thinking "I have no idea how they're going to get this huge cake from the apartment to a park." haha I guess they pulled it off though!

Anyways, so now two years later I made her daughter's 2nd birthday cake. The party was Elmo themed. Surprisingly, I haven't done much Sesame Street cakes. The candles in Elmo's hands are real.

It's really easy to pick a theme for him because he gets obsessed with things and becomes all about them. His current obsession is Scott Pilgrim. I made his favorite volume into a cake!

One of my favorite customers celebrated her 40th birthday over the weekend. The colors she had for the invitations were coral and Tiffany blue, so she wanted those colors for the cake. She also wanted the cake to look like gifts. I've done a lot of gift cakes before, so this was easy squeezy!

It's hard to tell in the pic, but the top "gift" has a diamond pattern with blue sugar pearls. So cute!

My mom used to make me smashed meat on bread when I was a kid. It's a recipe she got from my grandma. The title says it all: smashed ground beef on bread, cooked in the oven. I'd eat it with ketchup. It was simple and delicious! My grandma's birthday was last week, so I thought I'd pay tribute to her recipe by making it a cake!

I make a lot of the same theme cakes. Of course I love making them all, but it's nice when I get a request for something different. A co-worker wanted a birthday cake for her dad. He collects coins, so she wanted a 1943-S penny. I guess it's a rare coin. I don't know anything about coin collecting, but I was excited to make this cake! Instead of "In God We Trust" I put her dad's name. And instead of 1943, I put his birth year.

It's Hello Kitty season! Or something like that, because I've gotten a lot of Hello Kitty cake orders lately. I've done a few Hello Kitty face cakes before, so I wanted to change things up with this one. My co-worker's daughter's favorite color is purple, so I wanted to incorporate it in the cake. Other than that, I didn't really plan out a design. Going with the flow was a good idea, because the cake was adorable!

There's a screening of Pee-wee's Big Adventure on the beach tomorrow night. I told my friend Justin that I was going to make Pee-wee cupcakes for us to eat during the movie. He knows the guy putting on the event and before I knew it, he made a deal for me to sell my cupcakes at the event. I went from making probably a dozen cupcakes to making almost 100. lol

Unicorns and Rainbows

The wonderful VS_Jess requested a cake for her daughter's birthday. Her daughter loves horses - all horses, real and fantasy. Fantasy ones are more fun, so I went with a unicorn theme. When it comes to unicorns, you've got to have rainbows, too!

You can't really see it in the picture, but the unicorn and blue part of the cake are covered in pearl dust. Sparkle, sparkle!

Mike's friend and his lady are having a baby. The baby shower was yesterday and of course I made the cake! The theme was safari and all the future baby momma requested was a monkey hanging from a tree and a giraffe. I put that on top of the cake, "Baby Maddox" around the tiers and a leaf border. This was the first fondant/gum paste shoe I've ever made. I think it turned out nice!

One of my work BFFs and social media partner in crime, Justin, is leaving Hot Topic. :( I'm super bummed about it because he's the one that makes work fun. During these weird times at work, he kept me laughing. It's gonna be weird not seeing him almost every day.

Working in social media together, we got to spend the day watching stupid videos. One of our favorites is the Honey Badger. Justin is like a honey badger, so for his last week of work I made him this cake.

I smashed part of the red border putting the cake in the box, but I figured the honey badger don't care. It doesn't give a sh*t. :)

Mike's cousin knows how to throw a party. Her daughter's first birthday was this past weekend, so you know she went all out. The theme was bees and she asked me to make some cupcakes. She likes things simple, so I frosted the cupcakes in a beehive shape and make little bee fondant toppers.

A co-worker has been reminding me for a few months that her birthday is in May and she likes unicorns, just in case I wanted to make her a cake. lol Well her birthday is finally here. She has a vase on her desk with dirt and grass in it and in the middle is a little unicorn figure. Here's a pic of it...

I thought it would be fun to make a cake of that. It has a unicorn and I think she'd get a kick out of it. Here's my version...

Dexter Table Reading

A former co-worker emailed me last week with the most amazing opportunity! His friend works production on Dexter and she was looking to order some cupcakes for the first table reading for season 6. My former co-worker had shown her the Dexter cupcakes I had made before and she wanted me to make them. Ahhhhhhhhhh! *dies* Dexter is one of my favorite shows, so I was beyond excited.

So I made "blood" splatted cupcakes with knife, syringe and Dexter logo toppers. And a few of the cupcakes spelled out "Season 6."

I delivered these yesterday to the studio. I got to walk by the set and wardrobe. Eek! And the table reading room had scripts for the first episode of season 6 on the table. I wanted to peek so bad!! The cast was supposed to arrive an hour later, so I didn't get to meet any of them. :/ Buuuut the production lady said they're probably going to ask me to make the wrap party cake! Ahhhhhh! *dies again* I told the lady I hope they enjoy the cupcakes and she said "Oh, they're gonna love them. Michael C. Hall is gonna eat those cupcakes. The whole cast is!" *dies again*

There's a cafe inside of my work. Snazzy, I know. The manager of the cafe asked me a couple weeks ago to make a horse cake for his girlfriend. I was hesitant at first because I thought he was going to want a realistic, 3D cake. I wasn't in a mood to make a cake that was going to cause a lot of frustration. haha But after talking to him about it, he wanted a more cartoon horse.

It's because I recently moved and packing/unpacking has sucked my will to live. lol And in the process of moving I lost my camera for a bit. I found it this week though! My mom, sister and I helped host Mike's cousin's baby shower on Saturday. We were in charge of food, prizes and of course the cake. His cousin calls me Angie Bake a Cake. My mom is Mother Bake a Cake and my sis is Sister Bake a Cake. haha

The theme for her shower was baby animals with purple and green colors. I took the animals from her invitation and made them as fondant toppers. Around the cake I put purple and green polka dots.

I donate cakes to a women and children's shelter in Brea. These cakes are my favorite to make! If I could somehow make a living and donate all my cakes, I totally would.

The birthday girl wanted an Chinese themed party. I knew it had to have red and that I wanted a fortune cookie and fan involved, but it was still missing something. I really didn't want to make a dragon, because it just seemed way too hard. When I couldn't think of anything else to add to it, I attempted to make a simple dragon. It turned out better than I thought! It's not excellent, but it worked. :)

I lovelovelove Michael Jackson. "Black Or White" is my jam! I was pretty stoked when a co-worker asked me to make a MJ cake for her best friend's birthday. It was a small cake so I fit the essentials on it: his sparkly glove, his hat from Moonwalker and a record.

Last month the theme for the DWC's birthday party was the Roaring Twenties. If it weren't for the DWC I wouldn't get to make all these cool cakes. I love all their unique birthday themes!

I didn't get a picture of it, but the sides of the cake have black fringe like on the dresses of flapper girls.

Another SpongeBob cake! This one is extra special though. One of my favorite ladies, @GenSpin, ordered it for her youngest son. I was super duper excited to make this cake!

I had made one similar to this before, but the pineapple was a flat fondant piece. I wasn't a huge fan of it, so this time I made the pineapple out of cake. MUCH better! And I added Gary the Snail. :)

A former co-worker and her mother have birthdays one day apart. She wanted to celebrate with matching cakes. She loves Hello Kitty. So a cake with Hello Kitty and Mary White (her mom) was perfect! I made two separate cakes so the birthday ladies could each have their own cake.

Last week, one of my Internet Marketing peeps had a birthday. She's a total geek for Joss Whedon, so my original plan was to make a cake having to do with him. Then one of my other work peeps suggested making a hedgehog cake since she has one named Nom Nom. Genius!

I looked for some ideas online, but most of the cakes weren't very good. Until I came across one that used almonds for the spikes. Double genius!

It's too confusing to get into, so let's just leave it at that. haha For his birthday, I made a cake of his hoopty. He hates fondant, so I got to actually pipe an entire cake! It's been awhile.

I didn't mean to use a black foil for the cake board. I forgot about his black legs, arms and ears. So I outlined them in white fondant. All better!

A Masquerade Wedding

I love when people have themed weddings! Stacey, a co-worker, got married on Saturday and her theme was a purple and black masquerade. Loves it! She asked me to make her cake and pretty much gave me free reign.

I went with a black cake with a swirl design to match her dress. I wanted a purple and black mask on top, but it was SO hard finding one with just those colors. Most of them had silver or gold. When I finally found one, it was sold out. Grrrr. Stacey said I could go with a white mask, which I realized was a better idea since it was a wedding. I just added some purple feathers and roses to keep with the wedding colors.

I LOVE this cake!! It's definitely one of my best.

Mike's cousin's daughter (Mikaela) turned three on Saturday. They had a little birthday party for her and of course I offered to make the cake!

One of my regulars wanted a Belle-themed cake for her daughter's birthday. Beauty and the Beast might be my least favorite Disney movie. Yes, I said it! haha But there's so many possibilities when it comes to cakes. Since she was specific and wanted something with Belle, I went with draping yellow fondant, like her dress, on shimmery white fondant with rose accents. She provided the cake topper, so that's why there's a space on top. Just imagine a little Belle figure on top. :)

A Marital Masquerade

One of my co-workers is getting married in a couple weeks. She asked me to make the wedding cake. I'm SO excited. This will be my second wedding cake. I'm going to make sure to take a picture of it this time. haha The theme is a masquerade ball and her colors are black and purple. So fun! And the best part is she's giving me a lot of creative freedom. Also, I get to make other sweet treats. It's going to be the best dessert table ever! I can't wait.

She had her bridal shower this past weekend. I offered to make a cake for it. She asked if I could make a cake in the shape of a mask. So I made one in her wedding colors and added pearl dust, glitter and beads. I couldn't get a good picture to show off how sparkly it was, but here it is:

The beads took for-ev-er to put on. I had to do each one individually. I watched Modern Family while I did it, so it wasn't too bad. :)

A Little Pea in a Pod

Patti, an old high school friend, had a friend who needed a baby shower cake. The friend knew what she wanted, she just needed the baker. Patti recommended me. Yay! I only keep in contact with her through Facebook, so it was nice that she thought of me.

The theme for the cake was a pea in a pod with boy colors. I LOVE how the topper turned out. It's so cute!

I don't have cable, so I don't know what Mickey Mouse is up to these days. Apparently he has a Clubhouse. I know I'll be back in the loop with children's television once I have kids. Believe you me, my kids will love Mickey and anything Disney, because I do!

Yesterday it was 105°. The birthday party for this cake was at a park. The heat definitely took a toll on this cake. I'm glad I got a picture of it before the sun beat it up.

When I got this order for a Labyrinth cake I was so excited. But when it came to actually making it, I had trouble coming up with a design. The birthday girl loves David Bowie, the worm and the masquerade masks in the movie. I decided to go with the worm since he's so cute. Creating him out of fondant wasn't easy though. I'm not an artist/sculptor in any sort of way. I think the worm turned out ok. Next time I'll do a masquerade mask. haha

America's Favorite Ketchup

I gave away a custom cake on my Facebook page a couple weeks ago. I got around 75 fans because of it. So awesome! The winner of the cake requested a ketchup bottle cake for her son's surprise birthday party. I guess he loves ketchup? Ranch > Ketchup... just sayin'. :)

Their last name is Hein, so I removed the "z" and boom: Hein Birthday Ketchup. So perfect! PS I'm aware the top circle label still says Heinz. :P Oops!

I love Dr. Seuss. Who doesn't?? He's a childhood staple! I remember when my mom made me and my sister green eggs and ham. We were SO excited, until it was time to eat. All of a sudden we were grossed out, even though she just used food coloring. She had to talk us into eating the food and we were convinced it didn't taste the same. haha Oh, the memories!

I've met a lot of great people through Twitter. One of those people is @RokkSteadyND. I made her a No Doubt-themed birthday cake a few months ago. I also met her son when I delivered that cake. He's SO adorable! He's turning 5 now, so Blanca asked me to make his cake. He loves Spider-Man and Batman, so I made a cake with both superhero themes.
