The Candy Shop

I've been wanting to make a gumball machine cake for-ev-er! I finally had the chance to for this month's DWC birthday party. The theme is candy shop... perfect!

The only problem was that I made the cake a week early. :/ My mom told me the party was this week. She was wrong. So I'll have to re-create this cake next week. I'll just look at it as practice makes perfect. haha

Santa's Favorite Sport

I would hate to have my birthday around Christmas. First, most people try to count one present for both your birthday and Christmas. Second, I bet most of your birthday cakes have some sort of Christmas theme. Thankfully, my birthday is in June. haha

This is the second Christmas-themed birthday cake I've made this month. At first look you think it's just a Yankees cake, but Santa managed to sneak in on the side. He's so tricky!

Once, twice, 84 Times a Ladybug

I got an order for a ladybug smash cake with matching cupcakes. Easy, right? Not when the order is for 84 cupcakes! I knew the cupcake toppers weren't something I could do in one sitting, so thankfully I was smart and started them earlier in the week. I was so over ladybugs by the time I finished this order. lol But they turned out adorable!

A Sweet Trip to China

I donate cakes to a women and children's shelter in Brea. These cakes are my favorite to make! If I could somehow make a living and donate all my cakes, I totally would.

The birthday girl wanted an Chinese themed party. I knew it had to have red and that I wanted a fortune cookie and fan involved, but it was still missing something. I really didn't want to make a dragon, because it just seemed way too hard. When I couldn't think of anything else to add to it, I attempted to make a simple dragon. It turned out better than I thought! It's not excellent, but it worked. :)

Let There Be Light

A UC Berkeley-themed cake for a co-worker!

Uh oh... Moonwalker's Back

I lovelovelove Michael Jackson. "Black Or White" is my jam! I was pretty stoked when a co-worker asked me to make a MJ cake for her best friend's birthday. It was a small cake so I fit the essentials on it: his sparkly glove, his hat from Moonwalker and a record.

The title for the blog is from an Aquabats song. Just FYI. :)

The Roaring Twenties

Last month the theme for the DWC's birthday party was the Roaring Twenties. If it weren't for the DWC I wouldn't get to make all these cool cakes. I love all their unique birthday themes!

I didn't get a picture of it, but the sides of the cake have black fringe like on the dresses of flapper girls.

Who Lives in a Pineapple Under the Sea?

Another SpongeBob cake! This one is extra special though. One of my favorite ladies, @GenSpin, ordered it for her youngest son. I was super duper excited to make this cake!

I had made one similar to this before, but the pineapple was a flat fondant piece. I wasn't a huge fan of it, so this time I made the pineapple out of cake. MUCH better! And I added Gary the Snail. :)

Like Mother, Like Daughter

A former co-worker and her mother have birthdays one day apart. She wanted to celebrate with matching cakes. She loves Hello Kitty. So a cake with Hello Kitty and Mary White (her mom) was perfect! I made two separate cakes so the birthday ladies could each have their own cake.

Nom Nom

Last week, one of my Internet Marketing peeps had a birthday. She's a total geek for Joss Whedon, so my original plan was to make a cake having to do with him. Then one of my other work peeps suggested making a hedgehog cake since she has one named Nom Nom. Genius!

I looked for some ideas online, but most of the cakes weren't very good. Until I came across one that used almonds for the spikes. Double genius!

Here's my little hedgehog:

The "spikes" took forever to put on the cake. Good thing this was a small cake!

Double the Cheese

One of my favorite ladyfriends at work requested a cheesecake that looked like cheese for her birthday. She requested it months ago, so I couldn't let her down!

I ate the cut-out piece. :X

The Hoopty

My "boss" drives a hoopty. Boss is in quotations because even though I'm reporting to him, he's not technically my boss. It's too confusing to get into, so let's just leave it at that. haha For his birthday, I made a cake of his hoopty. He hates fondant, so I got to actually pipe an entire cake! It's been awhile.

Holy Delicious, Batman!

An old co-worker ordered a Batman-themed cake from me a couple weeks ago. She knew exactly what she wanted. She had it all sketched out. So that made things easy! haha

My Favorite Robot

Invader Zim/Gir cakes are one of my favorites to make. I've only gotten to make two though. Bummer! Here's a giant Gir I made for a co-worker...

I didn't mean to use a black foil for the cake board. I forgot about his black legs, arms and ears. So I outlined them in white fondant. All better!

And I made some matching cupcakes!

WoW

There's one geeky realm I just don't understand: World of Warcraft. I don't get how people become obsessed with it. I've never tried to play though. I'm not hatin' at all. I just don't get it, but that's alright! To each his own. :)

Here's a WoW logo cake I made for a co-worker. I didn't know if she was Horde or Alliance, so I played it safe. haha

A Masquerade Wedding

I love when people have themed weddings! Stacey, a co-worker, got married on Saturday and her theme was a purple and black masquerade. Loves it! She asked me to make her cake and pretty much gave me free reign.

I went with a black cake with a swirl design to match her dress. I wanted a purple and black mask on top, but it was SO hard finding one with just those colors. Most of them had silver or gold. When I finally found one, it was sold out. Grrrr. Stacey said I could go with a white mask, which I realized was a better idea since it was a wedding. I just added some purple feathers and roses to keep with the wedding colors.

I LOVE this cake!! It's definitely one of my best.

Pretty Princesses

Mike's cousin's daughter (Mikaela) turned three on Saturday. They had a little birthday party for her and of course I offered to make the cake!

Mikaela wanted a princess cake and blue frosting... done and done!

The best part was when Mikaela saw the cake she immediately poked it to get some frosting. lol

A Lil' Pumpkin

I made a deal with one of my co-workers awhile ago: three cakes in exchange for Disneyland tickets. A sweet deal if you ask me! This past weekend, I made the third cake for him. His wife is pregnant and they had a Halloween-themed baby shower.

Black and orange with a pumpkin baby on top:

A Sweet Hoot

A co-worker's friend hit me about about making an owl cake for his girlfriend. He was looking for a cute owl, but not too childish and definitely not scary. Uh, I don't see many scary owls out there. lol

I think this is exactly what he was looking for:

Go Diego! Go Dora!

Dora the Explorer is a popular cake theme! This is my third one. I ordered the figures from Decopac. I don't even think Diego and Dora are old enough to drive.

Nightmare Before Christmas

One of my co-workers LOVES The Nightmare Before Christmas and Halloween. She's pregnant and due soon. Perfect timing to have a baby around your favorite holiday! She must have planned it. haha Her department threw her a Halloween-themed baby shower yesterday and asked me to make some Nightmare Before Christmas cupcakes.

Movie Night

I love movie nights! PJs, snacks and movies... that's all this girl needs.

This cake was for a women & children's shelter. I make all their birthday cakes and they're definitely my favorite ones to make.

Beauty Minus the Beast

One of my regulars wanted a Belle-themed cake for her daughter's birthday. Beauty and the Beast might be my least favorite Disney movie. Yes, I said it! haha But there's so many possibilities when it comes to cakes. Since she was specific and wanted something with Belle, I went with draping yellow fondant, like her dress, on shimmery white fondant with rose accents. She provided the cake topper, so that's why there's a space on top. Just imagine a little Belle figure on top. :)

A Marital Masquerade

One of my co-workers is getting married in a couple weeks. She asked me to make the wedding cake. I'm SO excited. This will be my second wedding cake. I'm going to make sure to take a picture of it this time. haha The theme is a masquerade ball and her colors are black and purple. So fun! And the best part is she's giving me a lot of creative freedom. Also, I get to make other sweet treats. It's going to be the best dessert table ever! I can't wait.

She had her bridal shower this past weekend. I offered to make a cake for it. She asked if I could make a cake in the shape of a mask. So I made one in her wedding colors and added pearl dust, glitter and beads. I couldn't get a good picture to show off how sparkly it was, but here it is:

The beads took for-ev-er to put on. I had to do each one individually. I watched Modern Family while I did it, so it wasn't too bad. :)

A Little Pea in a Pod

Patti, an old high school friend, had a friend who needed a baby shower cake. The friend knew what she wanted, she just needed the baker. Patti recommended me. Yay! I only keep in contact with her through Facebook, so it was nice that she thought of me.

The theme for the cake was a pea in a pod with boy colors. I LOVE how the topper turned out. It's so cute!

Meeska, Mooska, Mickey Mouse!

I don't have cable, so I don't know what Mickey Mouse is up to these days. Apparently he has a Clubhouse. I know I'll be back in the loop with children's television once I have kids. Believe you me, my kids will love Mickey and anything Disney, because I do!

Anyways, here's a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse cake:

Yesterday it was 105°. The birthday party for this cake was at a park. The heat definitely took a toll on this cake. I'm glad I got a picture of it before the sun beat it up.

Pride=Passion=Power

My first hockey-themed cake! Now that I think of it, I haven't made many sports-themed cakes. Weird.

For the L.A. Kings. Pride=Passion=Power=Yum!

'Ello!

When I got this order for a Labyrinth cake I was so excited. But when it came to actually making it, I had trouble coming up with a design. The birthday girl loves David Bowie, the worm and the masquerade masks in the movie. I decided to go with the worm since he's so cute. Creating him out of fondant wasn't easy though. I'm not an artist/sculptor in any sort of way. I think the worm turned out ok. Next time I'll do a masquerade mask. haha

America's Favorite Ketchup

I gave away a custom cake on my Facebook page a couple weeks ago. I got around 75 fans because of it. So awesome! The winner of the cake requested a ketchup bottle cake for her son's surprise birthday party. I guess he loves ketchup? Ranch > Ketchup... just sayin'. :)

Their last name is Hein, so I removed the "z" and boom: Hein Birthday Ketchup. So perfect! PS I'm aware the top circle label still says Heinz. :P Oops!

I Love You, Cupcake!

Working for Hot Topic has allowed my love for Gir to grow ridiculous amounts. I love that crazy robot. You know what's the best part about him? He loves cupcakes! My honorary niece, Miranda, turned 13 yesterday. She loves Gir and cupcakes, too, so this was the perfect opportunity to combine the two in a cake!

So much cute!

So Yummy! So Yummy!

I LOVE The Aquabats. If you're super rad, you know that Christian Jacobs aka The MC Bat Commander created Yo Gabba Gabba! I love the show so I always enjoy making a Yo Gabba Gabba! themed cake.

If someone requested a Digital Unicorn cake, that would be awesome.

Blast Off

Another Toy Story themed cake! This one looks like it's just a space themed cake, but I didn't have to cake topper when I took the picture. The lady who ordered the cake sent me a picture of the topper and asked for a space cake in matching colors. Done and done!

Here's the candle topper:

And the cake:

Beat Drums! Beat Drums!

The snazzy @c_johns hit me up awhile ago about making a cake for her boyfriend. He loves the Muppets and he's a drummer, so an Animal cake was the only way to go!

I forgot to get a picture of the side of the cake. It looks like a drum, so Animal is bustin' through it.

Braaaaains!

I've been wanting to make a zombie cake for-ev-er and I finally got a request for one! Woo hoo! It was a small cake, so I kept it simple. Some zombie silhouettes around the side and a huge, gooey brain on top. The undead never looked so yummy!

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

Spider-Man isn't my favorite superhero, but I've decided I LOVE making Spider-Man cakes! Instead of doing a web print on the cake, this time I went with a cityscape theme. I added a couple spiders, too.

Anpanman

Anpanman is a Japanese cartoon character. I had never heard of him until someone requested this cake. I still don't know anything about him. He's cute though!

Cat in the Hat

I love Dr. Seuss. Who doesn't?? He's a childhood staple! I remember when my mom made me and my sister green eggs and ham. We were SO excited, until it was time to eat. All of a sudden we were grossed out, even though she just used food coloring. She had to talk us into eating the food and we were convinced it didn't taste the same. haha Oh, the memories!

Here's a Cat in the Hat themed cake.

I hope I get to make a One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish someday!

Superhero Mashup

I've met a lot of great people through Twitter. One of those people is @RokkSteadyND. I made her a No Doubt-themed birthday cake a few months ago. I also met her son when I delivered that cake. He's SO adorable! He's turning 5 now, so Blanca asked me to make his cake. He loves Spider-Man and Batman, so I made a cake with both superhero themes.

This cake turned out so perfect!

All Flavor. No Bite.

The delightful Miss @DFid turned 22 yesterday. Like my brother-in-law, she has gotten some of my best cakes. This year I made her a True Blood-themed cake.

Tru: Blood bottle in a red velvet flavor...

Camp Out

The theme for this month's DWC birthday party was camping. I don't even know how the coordinators come up with some of these themes, but I enjoy it! It gives me a chance to branch out and make new types of cakes. I loves it.

A tent, a campfire with a roasting marshmallow and a river. What more could you want in a camping scene?

The Goon

I love my brother-in-law for many reasons. One of my favorite reasons is because he's into cool things which means I get to make cool-themed cakes! Last year I made him a Murderface cake.

I LOVED that cake. I didn't think I could top it until I figured out the theme for his birthday cake this year... The Goon! He's totally into that comic, so I had to make a cake with that theme. I found a really awesome sketch of the main character and redrew it on the cake. The logo is made out of fondant.

I LOVELOVELOVE this cake! It turned out so rad.

A Day at the Beach

My favorite gift to give is a cake. It's the perfect personalized gift! Even though it can't be kept forever, it's something that takes a lot of thought and time to create.

Mike's friend's daughter turned one last week. When I got the invitation for the birthday party, I immediately made Mike text his friend to ask if I could make the cake. Sometimes I'm a little pushy. haha She was all for it though. The party had a beach theme. I went with a entire beach scene with water, sand and a blue sky.

A Manly Luau

One of my friend's hit me up for a Hawaiian/luau themed birthday cake for his cousin who was turning 10. When I think of a 10-year-old boy's birthday, luau doesn't come to mind. Maybe for a girl. So I made the manliest luau themed cake I could think of... bamboo sticks, a volcano and a tiki mask!

The bamboo stick border took an hour to make. Yikes! It was totally worth the time though. The tiki mask is my favorite.

Under the Sea

The Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney movie. Hands down. Aladdin is a close second, though. So I always enjoy getting a request for a Little Mermaid themed cake.

Next time I need to watch the movie while making the cake. Fun times for sure!

Hello... Kitty

I've gotten to know so much more people at work just through making cakes. Word of mouth is the best advertising ever! A co-worker requested a Hello Kitty face cake to feed four people. Four people? That would be a tiny cake! I made a cake that would serve a few more people so I'd have enough cake to work with.

I've made a few Hello Kitty cakes before and this one is definitely my favorite. It came out so perfect!

Queen of Hearts

It's my friend Emiry's birthday today. Yesterday we went out for drinks to celebrate. I wasn't planning on going since I'm sick, but I didn't want to be a flake. I don't like to go to birthday celebrations without a cake. haha So I made this cake like an hour before we were supposed to go out. Hooray for last minute cakes!

She likes Alice in Wonderland so I made her a Queen of Hearts-themed cake. It's not very detailed and doesn't have the Queen anywhere on it. I didn't have a lot of time to make it. I think it's super cute though!
