A Cake for a Boss

My favorite cakes to make are the ones that only a few people will understand. My boss celebrated 15 years at the company last week. We had a little potluck for him and of course I made the cake. I decided to incorporate three of his favorite things: Dolly Parton, cakes and wine. Also, it's been a running joke how much he hates the word "moist," so I had to put it on the cake.

Every Cake Needs a Captain

Two Avengers themed orders in a week?! Best week ever! This one was all about the Captain of the team.

Avengers Assemble!

I'm SO excited for The Avengers movie. I'm counting down the seconds! When a co-worker asked if I could make some Avengers cupcakes for her boyfriend, I was all over it. I was planning on making some just for fun anyways, so it worked out perfectly. :)

Red, White and Black

This cake started out as a spring themed cake. I had creative freedom, so I decided to go with flowers. Springtime = flowers! I planned on doing a pink, green and yellow theme, but then I found out the birthday girl's favorite colors are red and black. Not exactly spring colors, but that's ok! I made the flowers cascade and added some fancy piping.

Cupcake Bows

One of my favorite ladies, @VS_Jess, last weekend. I wanted to make her some cupcakes and she left the design up to me. Since she makes the cutest hair flowers and bows, I decided to make some of her creations in cupcake form!

Tee Time

My cousin's father-in-law turned 70 two weeks ago. She had a black and white themed party for him, but wanted the cake to have a golf element. So I made a golf ball with some silver and black argyle. Argyle makes things fancy, of course!

Put On Your Dancing Shoes

When I think of disco, the words "elegant" and "fancy" don't really come to mind. I had to make it work for a recent cake though. The co-worker who ordered it sent me the invites to her 50th birthday party which were black with white filigree. She wanted it to match the invites and incorporate a disco theme, plus a high heel and dancing steps. Lots to put on a cake, but I think I pulled it off.

Yee-Haw!

Here's a cowboy-themed cake I made for this weekend. The lady who ordered had a picture of what she wanted with just a couple of changes, so that made it easy squeezy. Giddy up!

Don't Bite Your Friends, Bite This Cake!

I loves me some Yo Gabba Gabba! I have a keytar toy that I might let my son play with in the future. MIGHT. He'll have to earn it. ;) So I always welcome Yo Gabba Gabba! themed cakes. For this one, the lady only wanted Muno. I added his bumps after I took the picture. Oops!

Show Off Your Stripes

The cake orders have picked up. Woo hoo! Here's a zebra striped cake with matching cupcakes that I'm delivering today.

Get in. Get out. Get away.

The Academy Awards are tonight and I'm going to a party. I'm not super into The Oscars, but I do enjoy a party. I figured I'd make a Drive-inspired cake. Yes, I know it was only nominated for one award, but it's my pick for best movie of 2011!

I decided to go with the jacket Ryan Gosling wears in the movie. Here's a picture of it if you're nuts and haven't seen the movie yet.

Here's my cake. I added a diamond texture to the fondant base and some pearl dust all over to match the jacket.

The Eighth Wonder of the World

Four years ago I made Mike a King Kong cake for his birthday. Well, I attempted to make one. This was before I took any classes, so the cake was a hot mess. It started melting in the car. It just didn't look good.

Here's a picture of the cake. I post it with great hesitation!

It's terrible, I know. That cake has haunted me ever since. This year I decided it was time for a King Kong do-over. I'm happy to say that this one turned out waaaaay better.

A Race Through Italy

Another one of my favorite customers is @GenSpin. She is one of the sweetest and most positive ladies I know. She wanted a Cars 2 cake for her son's birthday. He loves Francesco from the movie, so she wanted an Italian touch to the cake. I went with a race through Italy theme with famous monuments from the country. Also, the race track is in the shape of a "5" because that's how old her son turned.

Treasure Huntin'

I love pirates. I mean who wouldn't want to drink rum all day and look for treasure? I always enjoy making a pirate-themed cake. This one was for a co-worker. She sent me a bunch of cakes she liked and I just combined elements from them.

Freaky Just Got Fabulous

@VS_Jess is one of my favorite customers! She's also my hair flower/bow lady. She's just an all-around awesome lady! I lovelovelove making cakes for her, especially for her daughters because they get so excited. Totally makes my day.

This was a Monster High cake I made for her oldest daughter.

Hello Pretty

My lovely friend and co-worker, @fauxamor, celebrated her birthday back in November. See, it's been awhile since I've updated this blog! She loves many things, but some of her favorites are unicorns, Hello Kitty, the color pink and Rob Pattinson. I combined all those things for one girly, sparkly cake!

Fight On!

I give one of my co-workers a hard time every time she orders a cake. Mostly because she gave me a guilt trip when I couldn't make her daughter a birthday cake one year because I was at Comic-Con. It's all fun and games and she's a frequent customer so I don't sass it up too much.

Her nephew's birthday party was the day of a USC game, so that was the theme for the party. I think her nephew was just turning one, so it's not like he cared. haha I made a football cake with the school logo.

A Fish Out of Water

A former co-worker's boyfriend ordered a birthday cake for her back in July. She returned the favor for his birthday a couple months ago. He's an outdoors person, so she wanted a fish cake, specifically a trout. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to pull it off, but I think it turned out ok!

It's a Jungle Out There

I got an order for a jungle-themed birthday cake. Here are the decorations that were used for the party:

I made fondant toppers to match the decorations with a green cake base and leaf accents.

Dr. Seuss Mashup

A former co-worker hosted a baby shower for her best friend a few months ago. The theme for the shower was Dr. Seuss. She gave me all the ideas and books she wanted to incorporate and I mashed them all up into a cake!

The fish are my favorite part. :)

There's a Cake for That

One of my regular customers wanted a cake for her best friend. She gave me a long list of her friend's favorite things and offered some suggestions for the cake. I wanted the cake to make sense instead of just sticking a bunch of random things on it. Since her friend loves her iPhone I suggested making an iPhone cake and having the apps be all her interests. Genius, I know. ;)

Time to Play Catch-Up

I haven't been taking as many cake orders as usual lately, but I've still made a few. I'll do some catch-up entries and then get back to my regularly scheduled baking adventures. :)
