Do the Ska

One of my favorite people at work is Ben. We have the same last name, so we call each other brother/sister. You know the best part about him? He loves ska! I guess his sister (not me haha) does, too, because he ordered a ska cake for her birthday. Her favorite bands are Save Ferris and Five Iron Frenzy. I couldn't think of a clever way to fit that on the cake without just putting the bands' logo, so I went with a generic ska theme. Checkers, music notes and a couple skankin'!

You KNOW I listened to some ska jams while decorating this cake!

A Tasty Gift

I really love HR at work. I get most of my cake orders from them! They keep me busy. =)

This order was for a girly gift box cake. I decided to go with purple polka dots. I also tried a new bow technique. I love how the bow turned out. Definitely my best one.

Heaven is a Cake on Earth

In case you're wondering, yes, yes, I am listening to Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven is a Place on Earth" as I type this...

This month's theme for the DWC birthday party was "heavenly." I had my camera with me at the party, so I was able to take pictures of the decorations.

The tables were decorated with strings of lights under white tablecloths, white tulle, gold star confetti, candles, white flowers and angels made of paper plates.

Here's a close up of the paper plate angels.

Cotton fluff with stars on the ceiling lights.

The dessert table. Always my favorite table!

I decorated the cake with a white cloud border, yellow fondant stars and angel and "Happy Birthday" cloud toppers. Here are a couple close-ups.

NxD

For those who don't know, I lovelovelove No Doubt. I mean, I LOVELOVELOVE No Doubt. They're one of my top five favorite bands. There was a time when almost every single spot on my bedroom walls and ceiling were covered with No Doubt posters/pics. So getting an order for a No Doubt themed cake makes me oh so giddy!

For this one, I had freedom to do whatever I wanted. All they asked is that I incorporate the band's albums. So I ordered some edible images of the album covers and placed them on the sides of the cake. Here's a pic:

On the top I put some No Doubt symbols/logos. An orange, a pink Saturn, an NxD logo and a boom box. I added a checkered border with some rasta striped corners.

I lovelovelove this cake!

Baby Butterfly

My friend, Amy, also had a birthday party for her daughter this past weekend. I made the cake for her baby shower last year. Here's a pic of it:

So it was only fitting that I make the cake for her daughter's first birthday! The theme for the party was butterflies. I bought a butterfly-shaped pan and used some colored sugar to add some sparkle to the cake.

Here's Cambria eating the cake:

Too cute!!

March Madness

Two basketball cakes in one week! Perfect for March Madness.

This cake was for my soon-to-be cousin-in-law's boyfriend. She planned a surprise birthday dinner for him at Chili's. We got to the restaurant early to reserve the table and having this cake with me was kind of annoying. I really wanted to grab the basketball and throw it. It's a good thing the hostess offered to keep it in the fridge for us!

Wistaria Festival

My good friend, Amy, hit me up about making a cake for her husband's grandma's 90th birthday. She loves the Wistaria Festival and the theme for the party was purple. The best part about this order is that the birthday lady's name is Snooky! Loves it!

I initially planned to make the wistaria flowers out of fondant. But after some research and considering all the cakes I had last week, I decided to make them out of frosting. The shade of purple I used is a little darker than I wanted, so they kind of look like grapes. haha Oops! BUT I met Snooky yesterday and she LOVED the cake and said the shade of purple was perfect. So if Snooky loved it, that's all that matters.

Purple & Gold

Last week was cake madness. I have six orders for the week, four of them on the same day. I didn't think I'd get through it, but I did. Yay for good time management!

The first order for the week was a Lakers birthday cake. Living in Southern California, I'm surprised this was my first Lakers cake. Since I hate jersey cakes, I went with the Lakers logo on a gold/yellow basketball. The layers were also colored purple and gold, but I wasn't able to get a picture of the inside of the cake. I was told it looked awesome, though!

Rubber Ducky, You're the One!

I've done a few baby shower cakes and the theme that pops up the most is rubber duckies. If I was having a boy or didn't know the gender yet, I'd go with a jungle theme. Or dinosaurs! Girls can like dinosaurs, right?

Anyways, this rubber ducky cake looks similar to one I've made before, except this time I didn't add a bow to the top. I tried to find a bigger duck for the top, but none of the stores I went to had one. So I just made one out of fondant. It was pretty easy! I guess I'll be making my own ducks from now on.

Fancy Lady Purse

This is my second purse cake. I didn't want to make the same exact one as before, so I didn't add zebra stripes or polka dots to this one. I kept it simple and covered it with pink pearl dust. I didn't expect it to be such a bright pink though! I was hoping for a light pink shimmer, but that's ok. You can't really go wrong with any shade of pink!
