Tomorrow I get to go to a free screening of Alice in Wonderland... in IMAX 3D! My job has some pretty sweet perks. To celebrate the new film, I decided to make some Alice-themed cupcakes! These are based more on the Disney animated film. Maybe after I see the new one, I'll make some cupcakes based on it.
I went with a red velvet flavor in honor of the Red Queen.
Two group shots:
Red hearts for the Red Queen and Ace of Hearts cards:
"Eat me" sweets:
Cheshire Cat's face and mushrooms/flowers:
Mad Hatter's hat:

Made with Love
My mom's birthday is tomorrow. Since she's my baking partner in crime, I wanted the cake theme to involved that. A recipe card cake came to mind, but what recipe? A recipe for the "World's Best Mom" of course! My mom is wonderful. She's so supportive, generous, caring, smart and silly! She's a best friend and I don't know what I'd do without her.
I didn't come up with this recipe. I found a recipe for Motherhood and just changed it to "World's Greatest Mom." The cake is chocolate with crushed Thin Mints. Boy, oh boy, is it tasty!
I don't know why the red lines look wobbly. They're straight in real life! Promise! haha

B-I-N-G-O
The theme for this month's DWC birthday party is Bingo. I didn't attend the party prep meeting when the committee decided on the themes for 2010. I wish I had! But I have to say, the committee came up with some pretty snazzy themes. Bingo = fun!
I kept the cake simple. A Bingo board with some red markers. It only needs one more to win!
I can't wait to play Bingo with the ladies of the DWC tomorrow!

It's Goofy... Garsh!
One of the recruiters at work asked if I could make a Goofy cake for her niece. Goofy is her favorite. Goofy is awesome, I didn't think he was anyone's favorite though. But after posting on Twitter that I was making a Goofy cake, I found out tons of people love him. Who knew?
Wilton has a Goofy-shaped cake pan, but since it's discontinued it sells for big bucks on eBay. I didn't want to spend a lot of money and the shape of the pan wasn't complicated, so I just made the outline myself. Woot!

Valentine's Sweets
This isn't about cakes, but it's sweets related, so I figured I'd do a post! Last week at work we had a Valentine's Day potluck. I didn't know what I should make, so I asked for suggestions on Twitter and @sugarcrafter said chocolate covered pretzels. I LOVE chocolate covered pretzels. Best idea ever!
Here's the ingredients I used. The store didn't have regular pretzels, so I had to go with mini.
I melted the chocolate in my double broiler. I used paramount crystals to thin the chocolate.
I put the pretzels on parchment paper. I put pink and red sprinkles on some and drizzled pink and red chocolate on others.
Here they are in my Valentine's bowls!

Dora the Explorer's Quick Adventure
I got a very last minute cake request on Feb. 5th. Mike's mom needed a Dora the Explorer cake for the next day. It was for her step-granddaughter. I was a little irritated when I got the request for two reasons: 1. It didn't come across as a request. It was more like a demand. 2. She knew that her step-granddaughter's birthday was coming up. The date doesn't change. I made her birthday cake last year! But since I didn't have any other orders and her step-granddaughter is so dang cute, I made the cake.
I didn't have much time, so this was thrown together very quickly. I bought a Dora candle and made fondant flowers, clouds, stars and bees for a girly outside adventure cake.
Here are the fondant pieces:
And here's the cake:
It's cute! I just wish I had more time.
